Our Story

We are all students at John Wooden High School. All of us likely transferred to this school for a change, and to become a part of a smaller school community. Here we also chose to become part of the Girls Build Team to make an impact on our community. At John Wooden High School the girls in Girls Build LA work together to help our peers, and also our local community.

This year our goal was to create a food pantry on our campus to help the students and their families who are in need. With the items that we collected in our Food Drive we were able to create Food Kits to give out to our classmates. Aside from the food pantry we also continued with the Wooden Closet that was implemented on our school by last years Girls Build Team.

Mission Statement:
Our team aims to help those facing food insecurity in our school. 1 in 3 households in LA County are faced with food insecurity, and the
percentage of families dealing with this is only going up. Our mission is to educate our school about food insecurity and make it so that
the students feel comfortable with asking for help if needed, or to feel comfortable enough to go to our Wooden Closet and take what
they need. Last year our Girls Build Team created "Wooden Closet", a closet of clothing donation and hygiene necessities.This year we would continue servicing the closet and making it available for our peers, but we are also adding a Food Pantry.
